The East African Community (EAC) is actively supporting the implementation of the Customs Union by enhancing data exchange protocols and strengthening customs functions across Partner States. Central to this effort is empowering the EAC Secretariat with a stronger role in coordinating and monitoring the Customs Union process to ensure effective harmonization and enforcement of customs procedures. This includes full implementation of the Single Customs Territory (SCT), which simplifies cross-border trade by allowing goods to be cleared once at the first point of entry and move freely within the region. Additionally, digital tools and systems are being integrated to improve real-time data sharing and cargo tracking, thereby reducing delays and trade costs.
